Jerick Johnson, lead driver and spokesman for the POW-MIA Freedom Car, part of a national awareness campaign honoring US Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing In Action (MIA) soldiers, spoke out in honor of the 55 United States service members whose remains were repatriated to American soil in Hawaii.
“We regard the return of these valiant soldiers to be an important reminder to all the world of the high price of freedom, and the devastating cost of conflict. Assuming the remains can be identified and confirmed genuine, we would see this concession on the part of the Kim Jung Un regime to be a gesture of good will and a significant step towards reconciliation and hopefully, ultimate peace in the region and between our nations.”

Johnson’s written statement follows the release of the remains of 55 American soldiers killed during the Korean War (1950-1953) and interred in No. Korea by the hostile regime. The move has been seen by many as a significant diplomatic victory for the Trump administration and as part of ongoing negotiations aimed at the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Several previous US Presidents have attempted, unsuccessfully, to secure the return of these fallen soldiers.
“This is a great day for the families of these brave Americans, and for all of us,” Mr. Johnson said. “It’s exactly what the POW-MIA Freedom Car awareness campaign is all about. We will never forget these fallen soldiers. We will remember their sacrifices and keep that reminder in front of Americans until all of the more than 80,000 known MIAs are found and where possible, returned home.”
But Johnson cautioned that the repatriation of these soldiers’ remains is but a first step in returning them home to their families. “They will be placed in the custody of the Defense Department’s POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) for genetic testing and identification, a process that can take months or even years,” the racer said. “Let’s not forget; approximately 5,000 more American soldiers remain missing on the Korean Peninsula. This is a good start. But there is much more to be done,” Johnson said.
