Common Misconception About Changing Careers in Your 30’s

For better or worse, people are quite conservative when it comes to the progression of life. You’ll at times hear people say things like “To every single thing, there is a right time to do it…” In some cases, this is entirely justified, while in others, not so much. Nevertheless, society will always have certain expectations as to when someone should go to college, get a job, get married, get a mortgage, have kids, etc.

The same thing relates to a person’s career. The most common misconception about jobs is that you need to know what you want to do by the time you’re 30 and to remain the same until retirement.

It might have made sense back in the day, but in today’s fast-changing world, this may be counterproductive. Struggling to make ends meet in a dying industry while others are growing so fast in other sectors where there aren’t enough skilled employees to go around, makes absolutely no sense.

Take the IT industry, for instance. There are an estimated one million vacant tech jobs across the country and companies are struggling to outcompete each other by coming up with all sorts of benefit and compensation packages to attract and retain talent. Why should you stick with the same dead-end job if it can’t provide you with the same advantages and opportunities as Tech? Because you’re over 30? Nonsense!

Below are some of the other misconceptions people have about changing careers after 30.

You Should Already Know By Now

The most common line people use – You should already know by now – as they hear others saying they want to change careers. And while it would be fabulous if everyone had the answer early on, the reality is that most don’t. The fact is – people are drawn to comfort and changing careers is, indeed, a big step outside the comfort zone.

Nevertheless, it’s better to realize you’ve made a mistake and try to fix it than to “accept” that the time has passed. Most people remain stuck, and they expect you to do the same.

Nobody’s Going To Hire You At Your Age

As the IT industry is severely understaffed, do you think that employers will care that you’re 37 and only now have started in your IT career? Doubtful.

Naysayers will also go on to say; if you change your career, you will have to start again at the bottom. And while you’ll definitely won’t get the senior position on your first job, you shouldn’t discredit all the skills you’ve developed so far, as they will put you ahead of those who are at their first ever job.

Going Back To School Takes Too Long, and It’s Expensive

Changing careers will, most definitely, require you to take classes, but it doesn’t have to be a four-year or even a two-year college degree. Many 30-year-olds have other responsibilities that don’t allow them to go to college, in the first place. IT certifications, on the other hand, can be completed in a matter of months and can land you a job quickly.
