GI Bill: Explanations, Advantages, and Applications
What is the GI Bill?
The term “GI Bill” (historically and formally known as the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944) includes all education-related benefits earned by members and families of Active Duty, Selected Reserve, and National Guard Armed Forces.
The current major GI Bill Programs for active and retired service members are as follows:
- Post-9/11: Providing education benefits for service members who have served on active duty for 90 or more days since Since September 10, 2001.
- Active Duty: Monthly benefit payments for up to 8 academic semesters.
- Selected Reserve: Education and training benefits available to members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserves, and the National Guard.
- Vocational Rehab and Employment: Counseling, training, education and job placement assistance for veterans with a VA disability and employment handicap.

How can I use the GI Bill?
You can use the financial assistance from the GI Bill to cover a variety of education-related expenses. A few examples of training expenses covered by the GI Bill include:
- College Education
- Technical/Vocational School
- National Testing Programs like SAT
- Flight Training
